National Florist Day - 8th June
A look back on the history of flower arranging
Unfolding like a fragrant blossom, the art of flower arranging boasts a rich and vibrant history. Evidence suggests that as early as 2,500 BCE, the ancient Egyptians incorporated flowers into their daily lives. These weren't just random blooms - Egyptians meticulously placed them in vases, crafted them into elaborate arrangements for burials and processions, and even adorned themselves with floral creations.
The passion for floral artistry spread like pollen on the wind, reaching the shores of Greece and Rome. Here, vibrant displays of flowers adorned temples and public spaces, while intricately woven wreaths and garlands became a symbol of victory, achievement, and even love. The Greeks documented their floral techniques in written works, while the Romans revelled in lavish displays of flowers, from arches overflowing with blooms to rooms carpeted with fragrant petals.
Meanwhile, across the vast continent of Asia, the Chinese cultivated a deep appreciation for flower arrangements as early as 207 BCE. Their approach was steeped in symbolism and tradition, with specific flowers chosen to represent qualities like longevity, prosperity, and purity. These arrangements played a central role in Chinese ceremonies, from weddings and funerals to religious celebrations.
The art of flower arranging continued to evolve throughout history, reflecting the changing cultures and artistic movements of each era. From the minimalist elegance of Japanese Ikebana to the opulent displays of the Victorian era, the timeless beauty of flowers has continued to inspire and captivate for millennia.
National Florist Day - Why Now?
A group of like-minded florists from the Good Florist Guide, run by Caroline Marshall-Foster had this idea and decided it was about time to have a day dedicated to Florists! As you can see, it's only taken a few millennia to get the ball rolling. After much deliberation, the concept was born and to date 475 florists from across the UK have signed up.
